Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artistic expression and creative thinking. She was a night nurse to allow her aunt to have the space she required during her day time to enjoy the pleasures of art, literature, and theater. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the arts can serve to engage people. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma and decided to make an documentary on King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she received degrees in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. Her first job was as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to look at the trash of the home of a juror. The tasks that she had to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision not to continue in journalism, she moved on to the world of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight from college to be an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999.
